Chapter 16
Angus turned his attention back to Lena as the bell over the door jingled when the farmer and his wife left the mercantile.
For several long seconds, he stared at her from behind the counter, then she brushed a drop of moisture from her cheek and stood. Her struggle to fight the tears his mother and Amelia had caused drew him. âI love Ma, but I know that she can be cruel. Iâve seen it time and again with my brothers.â
âSons should love their mothers.â She brushed a another tear from her cheek, but she blinked trying to keep others back.
âAnd mothers should love their sons. You do with a love fierce and all-consuming.â He watched her tears slip back into hiding as a smile lit her face.
âTheyâre my special gift from God.â
âI admire your faith, your trust in God.â
Her lips tilted up just the tiniest bit. âYouâve had a lot to do with that.â
Stillness gripped him, kept him from moving, from breathing. âWhat?â
âYouâre books, especially the first one. They spoke to my heart. The words lifted my spirits, drew me closer to God. Through your words, you helped me understand how to trustânot just believe something was true, but to trust, to commit. And I thank you for that with all my heart.â
Angus stared into her eyes and saw the truthfulness there. She meant what she said, every word. He had heard others talk about his booksâGranny and Uncle James, but they were family. And family always supported one another. He had even listened to a couple of people talk of them during the war. But no one had ever spoken of his writing as she had.
She had seen his heart through his words. They had touched her.
Something cracked inside himâa small opening.
He reached up and touched her cheek.
Her eyes widened for a moment as a soft breath passed through her lips.
Her lipsâthey drew him closer.
His right hand moved from her cheek to the back of her neck and his other arm awkwardly wrapped around her waist.
He lowered his head as she raised hers.
Their lips met. Words werenât needed.
An eternity passed.
Suddenly, the world broke them apart when the door burst open, setting the bell over it to jingling, followed by snickeringâmale snickering.
Along with some soft female giggling.
